Princess Angelica is one of my oldest characters. She’s not as old as Kelly is, as Kelly is from ELEMENTARY school, but she’s still pretty old. I created her in Middle School for a story that was originally called Star Sages. I technically finished the whole “book” (it’s only a few pages long, typed in really big font…so, it’s not really a book, but more like a short story). During high school, during a creative writing class, I went ahead and wrote a short story featuring her and another character – the boy she was in love with. This fleshed her out a lot more.
I was inspired to draw Princess Angelica after working on what can technically be considered the second draft of the story. (If you’ve seen the Flavio & Sadia piece and the piece with Clyde, you probably are seeing a pattern here, haha.) Yes, it’s a rewrite of the story from high school. I actually can’t wait to do the next draft because oh my goodness, I have a bunch of new insights thanks to other stories I’ve been writing and plotting out!
One of Princess Angelica’s notable accessories is her fan. I’ve had her use a fan for a long time. And by a long time, I mean since she showed up in the original version of Star Sages. It’s her signature item. Despite being her signature item, she never had a consistent design for it. To be honest, I don’t think it technically does right now either, but I’m working on changing that.
But enough about Princess Angelica’s creation back story – let’s talk about the picture!
I’m really happy with the way the fan came out. Is it perfect? Nope, not at all! But it’s the first time, I’m pretty sure, that I’ve draw a fan like that. Normally, I just draw some sort of triangular pleated thing, so this is a HUGE step up!
I really like her hand, her hair, and her face. I almost wish I didn’t cover it with the fan, but that was the whole point of the picture. I also like that I used her fan in the background. I don’t really remember why I decided to do that, but it makes the picture just that much more interesting to look at.
However, there is quite a bit I don’t like. I don’t like how I did the textures on this one – everything is gray, dull, and kind of reminds me of an old TV or something. I tried using a canvas texture to make it look more interesting and painting-like, but I don’t like how it came out. I also…don’t like the colours of her outfit.
I think that’s really weird though because at one point, those were the colours of her outfit. Or at least, that’s what I remembered. Looking at it a few decades later though, I don’t like it on Princess Angelica. It could just be that it’s the same colour scheme I use for myself when I’m the Queen, but it could also be I just simply don’t think it suits her character anymore.
What do I think about this piece overall though?
I like it.
