Halloween was coming up and I wanted to draw something appropriate for the season because…why not? I don’t have the best relationship with Halloween – it soured for me in 2009, the same year conventions were soured for me – but I felt…I don’t know, a bit more upbeat about the 2020 Halloween season for no identifiable reason.
In addition to wanting to draw a Halloween-appropriate piece, I also wanted to practice perspective drawing. I had started to learn it and I’m pretty sure I was gaining a decent enough understanding. I wanted to see how I could make it work with a fully done piece.
That was when I decided to draw Seirian, one of my witch characters.
Seirian’s main hobby is “broom surfing” where she stands on a broomstick and “surfs” through the air. Why WOULDN’T that be the best option?
What do I think of the piece?
It is definitely not perfect by any means. There are a lot of things that are wonky about it, mainly due to my inexperience of drawing things from this sort of angle. I also am not a fan of all the red, but I went with it because I’m trying to work on establishing the “tone” for the world she lives in – I always see it a bit tinged red, but I just don’t like how it looks here. There must be a way to do it without making it consume everything…
I really love the angle I drew her in, despite it not being perfect. I think just the fact that I drew something…well, that isn’t looking straight-on is super interesting. I like that I attempted an bottom-up sort of perspective. I also really dig the trees in the background. If you can’t tell, they have glowing red eyes.
I think this might be one of those pieces that I love at the moment, but I’ll find it unimpressive later down the line.
