I don’t really remember why I drew this. I probably just wanted to draw Samantha, since it had been a while since I had last drawn her. I probably wanted her to do something less generic too…so I drew her on the verge of losing a battle.
You know she’s going to triumph, but for a moment, you think she might lose.
I don’t know what she’s fighting against. You can use your imagination for that.
There’s not really much to say about the sketch. I think for my skill level at the time (and probably current skill level), it’s good and does what I want it to do – make Samantha look like she’s propping/lifting herself up.
The main image (Samantha) was pretty easy to colour – I already knew her colour scheme, I already knew what I wanted to do with the blood details. There’s nothing special there. I did end up adding more blood than I originally intended, simply because I felt that there wasn’t enough to make her feel “hurt”. I also tried added some bruises. I don’t know if that worked or not.
The background was more worrisome for me. Backgrounds are a huge weak point for me, which I blame on not drawing backgrounds for years. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do for the background either.
I must say, I’m pretty dang satisfied with the result! Okay, there probably could be more rocks, but for what I tried, I think I did well. You can tell everything is rocks. I particularly like the smaller rocks on the left hand side. I didn’t expect to do a fiery background, but I think it looks good.
Overall, I really like this picture. I think Samantha’s hair came out pretty dang well. I like the unexpected fiery background that sets a certain tone. I’m satisfied with all the rocks. As far as I’m concerned, this is a great picture when it comes to my skill level. I hope other people like it as much as me.
